Serangoon Mini

Have not done analysis yet, but will give a brief description of the games. I’ve abandoned the 15 game thing I was doing – don’t think I want to finish all the games, it’s too tiring blogging. I intend to change my blog address to http://howbeit23.blogspot.com (howbeit is taken) – will be effected within a week.

Wins and losses were basically a zebra crossing… won all the games where I started second and lost all which I started first. The venue was just as good as always, I enjoyed the space and the relative serenity of the vicinity. This was a test-out phase for some tsh pairing system – seems to be more confusing but works almost just as fine.

Game 1 vs Tony

I go second, and draw ADEEFIO – thankfully he opens with URAEI, leaving me with ADEEFIOR (1) for 68. This opens the A8-D8 TLS/DLS spot, and I utilise it with TREZ for an all time ultimate cheapo 95! That brings my lead to 117 – and it maintains as I play FESS (42), OUTSING (87), MINGLE (30) and REMAILS (80) in quick succession. By the end of all this the score is 429 to 275.

He has replies though, albeit with phony (one of his many =p) – I didn’t challenge DOUCHER* (42) because I thought DOUCHERS* would have been a valid anagram for CHORUSED (seems like there’s only one there). He also got down COPY (61) and ENtRAIN (70) – but not enough to catch up. I figure I am pretty lucky this game but I don’t think I made any major mistakes. Will talk more about it, maybe, when I have started analysis.

Win 513-389
Bingos 3-1
Blanks 0-2

Game 2 vs Cheah

Bah! Two GMs in a row! Since I’ve been having decent tourney games against Cheah recently, I thought I could pull this one out – however my dreams are bulldozed as he plays DELLIES (71) and OUTPOINt (70) in succession. I am unable to bingo for most of the game, and have neither-here-nor-there racks like AAELORX and AEHLORV. I think the biggest mistake came in phonying TROOF* (I was 60% unsure of it, couldn’t imagine what I was doing), probably an influence from seeing deldar182 say “tr00” too many times! Meanwhile he scores well with QUENA (48), SWAP (37), JINN (42), GAME (35), WOST (33) – for most of the game I think I was opening for him to score, but I don’t think I could have done much, though I did get CLUSTERS (74) mid-game. Ultimately he outs with YeSTERN (78)

There is an interesting endgame position for this game – will post it up soon, when I’ve started analysis. I think what I did might have been right though.

Lose 326-515
Bingos 1-3
Blanks 0-2

Game 3 vs Kian Boon

Kian Boon is the eventual winner of the tournament but of course I don’t know it yet (OR MAYBE I DID). I am pretty determined to win (I don’t want 1 win of 4 during lunch like the last mini), while he is also looking forward to taking revenge on me from the Nationals. First rack is an uninspiring AAGIOUZ – he opens with NON, and I play ZOA for 36 (gives me some score, at least). Draw more vowels to play AGUIZE (keeping AE) later, opening the board up for my next move of ABEILLST (2) for 90 which is almost challenged. By then my lead is 80 – I extend it further with AGMOPRSU (3) for 76+5 in a lucky draw next turn. I’m about 3 times his score by then (and scoring well) so I am quite confident of winning this.

He cuts the spread down with a decent find of eEHMNORS (4) for 74 – but I’m still leading by 128. A few more plays and the scoreline is 414-264 – then we exchange bingos, with myself playing DAINTIeR (70) and him responding with INTERWAR (63) to my R. My last move, PEEOY (56) gives me the spread I need.

Win 540-346
Bingos 3-1
Blanks 1-1

Game 4 vs Yen Nee

This game starts quite interestingly – in 5 moves 4 power tiles are thrown out – the J, Q, X and Z. A few moves later I challenge BOGLE, giving her 36 for that move. (dudes, I never studied my 5s!) I’m happy to play AEEEGLSV (5) later for 84+5 but she replies with ABCEINRT (6) for the same score (including the 5 point!) My downfall comes when I play HOLA* which is immediately challenged – I seriously thought both HALO and HOLA* were good! Trust me to play in a tourney without practicing much for weeks… I think I lose the game mostly because of this phony though I get down PERITUS (75) – she gets INSERTeR (57) and OUTLASTs (68) in two successive turns, rendering myself helpless!

Lose 440-470
Bingos 2-3
Blanks 0-2

Lunch is as usual at a hawker centre, and I try to go for something more balanced. It ends as quickly as it begins though as I return for the next game.

Game 5 vs Hubert
He starts with GYM (keeping BJ and some other two tiles which I forgot), and I draw EINOOST to start, playing the Collins bingo! (76) Now slap yourself and leave a comment, with name “I don’t know what EINOOST is” if you couldn’t find the word. The game goes on quite slowly for the next two turns till I play WAITE (46) – he then goes OSIERED (77). I choose to go turnover even though I’m only up by 3, and this pays off as I extend my lead to 51 again, and this eventually leads to a bingo exchange of his ARRIAGeS (70) to my RAiLROAD (72). Make a stupid miss of CLEF for my last move, playing ELF instead – I think that’s the worst mistake of the game.

Win 435-414
Blanks 1-1
Bingos 2-2

Game 6 vs Guan Hui

Start with AAEMORU (OUMA) which is met with UNBEARS (71). I phony with YARrOWED*, missing many bingos in the process (I know all of them!! This is rustiness..). He adds punishment by playing a 5-hook TENONER (72) while I, being the weak player I am, can only cheapo him with WEARY (48) and ZOO (51) followed by a double blank aACGIUs (7) for 71. Few turns later (including a one tile fish when I have ABEINRT) land me with the stemmy INERTIAE (77). I’m still behind by about 20 by then – and he scores consistently (while I simply don’t really have the tiles to score well). The endgame is also interesting for this game – post more about it later.

Lose 423-436
Bingos 2-2
Blanks 2-0

Game 7 vs Andy

He certainly scares me with his first two moves – HIrEAGE (78) and SPECTaTE (69)! Luckily on the first move I have TAENIOID (86), but when I draw CMOORQW I’m kinda at a loss. This goes on later as I get clunky racks like ACIKOQR, ACKORVY and eventually CIOOUVV (of which I change all). I still don’t draw a bingo – and at a point of time I’m down by 131 (after his MATJES for 41 and ZA for 69, which cannot be compared to my TREZ against Tony though).

3 turns later I am lucky to draw REVOICE (81) out of a leave of EOR, then he starts fishing, 33 points in front – UT for 14 and LO for 14 allow me to catch up – now whoever bingos first wins. Thank goodness I get AEEGIRSU (8) for 72, sealing the game.

Win 495-440
Bingos 3-2
Blanks 0-2

Game 8 vs Tony (KOTH)

Rack is an uninspiring BEGPRTX and I play PREX. Later the game is lethargic – up to the point where he plays TAUrEAN (75), getting a reply QUITE (78) from me! Looks like I can only score good with cheapo tiles. Make two big mistakes this game – one is not challenging RADIALES* (I knew it wasn’t good but didn’t challenge since I thought it could be a valid anagram for SALARIED… I really need to start on words again), and the other is bingoing dARTLES (69) and leaving a spot for him to play TAJ (26) towards the end game. This loses me the game.

Lose 405-439
Bingos 1-2
Blanks 1-1

In general I felt I did quite OK, especially since I haven’t been doing many words/ playing much recently. Should have gone by my gut feeling more often and challenged things like RADIALES* and DOUCHER*. Tony did well even though he phonied lots – 3 phony bingos in total for all his games! (won’t mention them) Meanwhile I got 17 bingos in total, even with 5/16 blanks.
